The organic material in this desk is the Maple burl wood.
The burl is the wood in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner.
It’s anything but average. The swirls, twirls, and eyes dancing in the bark all create a unique, highly figured grain that no human could dream of designing.
A burl usually grows when the tree is undergoing some stress, in an area that’s been mistreated by fungus or infestations of insects. The tree’s growth hormones are disrupted and, consequently, it produces those colorful looking lumps and swirls.
alcarol recovered some burled logs from the undergrowth of the Italian Dolomite mountains and cut planks preserving the natural bark surface and live edges encased in a special resin resembling the water that generated their life.
The result is so distant from the stereotypical image of wood, that everyone can interpret its vision in its own way, maybe imagining a fantastic reef of a microscopic landscape…
