Armchair, daybed, chaise longue, sofa: S 5000 – the variable programme
Based on the archetype of the minimalist sofa with a base of bent tubular steel, which was first added to the Thonet portfolio in the 1930s, designer James Irvine developed a versatile furniture system that can be used in a variety of settings. The S 5000 sofa range is based on a simple, intelligent construction idea that makes use of the modular principle. Inspired by the ever-increasing fusion of working and living spaces, Studio Irvine, in keeping with its founder, took on the task of intelligently refining it, so that it would fit into the modern concept of New Work: structurally identical arm and backrests or dividing panels can be integrated into the seat frame as needed to serve as a sight and noise barrier. This makes it expandable in a variety of ways, and, thanks to its variable side panels, it can also be used in multi-space offices. The panels create a frame for various cushions, which can be loosely put in the desired place.
